India. England. Neither team has won a T20 World Cup in over a decade, and perhaps no two teams in that time have felt more often like they should be winning it. England have been able to call on a seemingly endless line of the best hitters T20 has ever produced, which has allowed them to play a futuristic brand of the format, while India have simply been serial winners – just have a look at their win-loss record since the end of the 2016 World Cup.
And yet. India haven’t got their hands on the trophy since 2007, and England since 2010. Now they meet for the first time in over a decade in T20 World Cups, and they meet in a semi-final. Adelaide is the venue, and we’re here a full hour and a half before the toss, because we know it’ll be a blockbuster.
Encouraging news for England fans. “Wood is warming up with the rest of the team,” Monga observes.
On Sky, however, Ian Ward has noted that Jordan has marked his run-up and that Wood isn’t playing. It’s Monga vs Ward in Adelaide, folks.
Abhi: “Can India replace one Patel (Axar) with another (Harshal), considering the kind of tournament the former is having?” — It’s a thought, but Harshal hasn’t played a single game at this World Cup so far. It would be quite a call to give him his first game in a semi-final.
Tom: “Think this game is India’s to lose, England still finding their feet under a new captain. Mind you if one of the big-hitting batters gets in, it could be a different story. I’d like to see Livingstone shine with the bat to go with some great bowling and fielding so far this WC.”
5.35pm Monga is at Adelaide Oval, and he’s watching India train. “Surya and Rahul having a hit at the nets. Karthik standing and watching. Is that a sign he’s out?”

Sriram Sundar : “If England wins, it’s 1992. Pak scraping through to semis, beating NZ in semis and facing Eng at MCG. If India wins, it’s 2007. India having their best batter at 4, beating Pak in a close game in league stage, beating the reigning 50 over champions in semis and facing Pak who beat NZ in the semis”
Steve Patten: “I’m an England fan. It’s 7am but I’ve been awake since 5. Nerves a jangling. Can the game just get underway please. On a separate note, one of the only good things to come from Covid-19, I am “working” from home today, no questions asked, so can watch the whole thing.”

CricDude: “I want India to win this T20WC for 3 people mostly. Ashwin, Rohit and Dravid. This might be Ashwin and Rohit’s last T20WC, what better farewell in this format. Only this trophy is missing in Ash’s resume. He got a ODI WC, CT, 2 each of IPL and CL. For a modern day legend who started as a T20 bowler, he deserves this. And Dravid for the legend he is and who could not have a big trophy in his playing career, he should get it.”
Shrey: “Do you think the curse of the Adelaide toss would be on the captains’ minds at all?” — Excellent question. The team winning the toss has lost six out of six matches here in this tournament. The caveat is, the clearly weaker side has won a lot of the tosses.
Varun: “Rohit seems to be backing his words of 1) giving people a long run and 2) trusting experience. His preference of Ash over Chahal and DK over pant have shown that. Expect Rohit to not change anything for KO. DK back for the semis and use the short square boundaries”
Kunal : “Rather than discussing selections , how about analysing what either team would prefer to do at the toss ? I think India would prefer to chase considering the small square boundaries.”
Merin: “Dont care if its DK or RP, I want RGS to perform today, and make DK vs RP a non-issue.”
Sanket: “Pant vs Karthik debate is pretty hard to solve, You want Pant so that you will have that left-handed option in the middle overs especially against Adil Rashid but it has the downfall of pushing Hardik to 6. And despite Hardik scoring some important runs in this campaign he hasn’t been at his fluent best which can hamper India’s chances of finishing strongly at the back end. And the weakened bowling of England means Karthik could be a real gamechanger in those crucial overs.”
Issac: “I have been a big fan of DK since 2004. He opens in Tests, takes blinders, and finishes games. But in KO both for KKR and Ind, he has come short. Moreover, learnings from yesterdays match, you need a proper keeper. One off day like Conway, and you will be on your way home.”
Sasikanth: “On a ground where the straight boundaries are long, Pant wouldn’t be a great fit. DK is more natural with his cross batted shots.. you’d think the death bowling is primarily going to be yorkers or slower balls into the pitch and you’d need someone who can manipulate the field.”
Dhaval Shah : “India’s bowling will be tested today against a long English line-up. Need a huge score batting first to challenge England.”
4.45pm Both sides have selection headaches going into this semi-final. For England, it’s all to do with injury: Chris Jordan is set to play, with Mark Wood set to sit out with muscle stiffness, while Dawid Malan, who has a groin injury, also seems unlikely to feature. Who might replace him? Well, they have more than one contender.
As for India, it’s more or less just the one question: Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik? As our first reader comments trickle in, let’s bring you into this debate.
RK Dubai : “I am surprised there is no discussion on Axar’s form with the ball, especially with Yuzi Chahal waiting in the wings. Although given that it’s England, Axar should probably get the nod.” — Axar’s had his struggles with the ball – chiefly because teams have used their left-hand batters well against him, I think – but his batting ability is hard to replace from within the current squad.
Abhinandan : “Good evening Karthik. How about we start the evening by remembering someone called Yuvraj carting English bowlers all over the park in the inaugural T20 World Cup?” — Speaking of that game, how well do you remember each of Yuvraj’s six sixes?
Velu: “India has SKY and HP to play the role RP plays. But only DK can play DK, so he should play.”
ElephantMan: “Wood out? You’d think that would be a pretty significant blow for England. He looked to be pretty lethal in the match or two I caught of him playing.”
Shrey: “I’m going to punt for Pant any day! He’s got the X factor for India, in form or no.And his keeping is definitely top notch!”
Wajid Jawaid: “Both of them have a very confident Pakistan waiting for them. Their hands have moved a few inches further away from the trophy after Pakistan’s performance yesterday.”
Sanket: “All ready for this epic game. I worked on weekends so that I can take a leave and watch this game with friends but unfortunately due to last minute work I had to cancel my leave. Hopefully Team India will be lucky tonight and get that final’s ticket.”

And then there were four: New Zealand, India, England and Pakistan. How did Pakistan even reach the semi-finals? They were on the brink of elimination after losing their first two games of the tournament, against India and Zimbabwe, and are now just two steps away from winning the title. Pakistan have made it 1992 again. They run into New Zealand once again in the semi-final. Some might call it destiny or Qudrat ka Nizam. More recently in the T20I tri-series final in Christchurch, Pakistan came back from the dead to stun New Zealand. Karthik Krishnaswamy’s preview should be your first stop of the day. I’m Deivarayan Muthu and I’ll be joined by Alan Gardner to bring you ball-by-ball action.

Shehryar Afridi: “My sixth sense is saying that it’s Pakistan’s day. Haris Rauf with his reverse-swing and Shadab Khan with his legspin are going to be the difference.”
5.35pm We will have some tasty match-ups in store today. Case in point: Haris Rauf has dismissed Devon Conway four times in just 27 balls, off which he has managed only 29 runs. However, two of those dismissals were in the last four overs of the innings. But in a World Cup semi-final, will Pakistan look to bowl Rauf early on to get rid of Conway? Gaurav Sundararaman and Sampath Bandarupalli look at where this semi-final could be won and lost.
Jay: “Prediction : This cup belongs to NZ after so many heartbreaks in the final.”
Mustafa Moudi : “Really excited for this Semi Final between sides that had contrasting paths to the knockouts. New Zealand Won, Pakistan Lost.. NZ’s result margin was huge while Pakistan’s result margin was extremely narrow. However, the common thing about their beginning was they began the tournament competing against their neighbours, against whom they lost the first and the last T20 WC Finals (India and Australia) !!”

The semi-finals line-up has been decided now. It’ll be New Zealand vs Pakistan at the SCG, and India vs England at Adelaide Oval. India top Group 2, not only with more points than anyone else, but they’ve also lifted their net run rate above Pakistan’s. A thumping win today, set up by another brilliant innings from Suryakumar Yadav, and finished off by the fast bowlers, who reduced Zimbabwe to 36 for 5 before Sikandar Raza and Ryan Burl saved some face.
Jayeshds: “What a competitive super 12,the lower half giving good fight to upper half in group and each team won at least a game. ”
karguvel: “Initially I was thinking group 2 is weaker group and India must win matches against SA and PAK to qualify. Finally it turned out to be more entertaining group ”
After two games of the three on Sunday, two semi-finalists from Group two are confirmed. South Africa were favourites to make it, but Netherlands pipped them and Pakistan overtook them. Pakistan have a come-from-nowhere entry to the semi-final. That would have been more pronouncing if the tournament hadn’t delivered them almost on demand. Today’s game was wobbly despite the start to the chase being stable. Babar didn’t look set but he spent time at the crease, got 25 off 33 in a low chase. Rizwan made 32 and ensured there were no wickets in the first ten.
That was also because a catch was dropped off of Taskin’s bowling by Nurul, the keeper, in his first over. After the tenth over, Bangladesh created chances but luck wasn’t as favourable as balls fell in no-man’s-landy areas and overthrows started costing them. The stars for Pakistan were Mohammad Haris and Shan Masood, the former slaughtered and the latter steered the modest chase to a safe finish.

Rohit Sharma: “A very good all-round performance, something we were looking for. We had qualified, but we wanted to come out and play the way we wanted to play, which we achieved. What SKY is doing for the team is remarkable, just coming out there, playing that way, taking the pressure off the others. We know his ability, and it allows the guy at the other end to take his time. The dugout can really be at ease when he bats, and he’s shown a lot of composure when he’s batted. We expected this from him, and he’s gone from strength to strength. The key for us will be to adjust quickly to the conditions.
We have played a game there, but we need to adjust quickly. England are a good team, and it will be a great contest. We should take pride in qualifying, firstly, and if we play that semi-final well, we have another big game as well. It’s about understanding the lines and lengths – the square boundaries are shorter – and executing well. The fans have been brilliant all this while, almost everywhere we have gone we’ve got a full house, and we expect the same in the semi-finals as well. On behalf of the team I’d really like to thank them.”
Craig Ervine: “I think maybe we could have changed up a couple of other plans. Suryakumar was brilliant at the end, negated Richey’s wide yorkers, which was our main plan. We could maybe have changed our pace a bit more there. Leading up to the tournament, we went in looking to be positive at the top, but the last 2-3 games we kind of went away from there. The ball was swinging, but to counter that we probably could have moved around a little bit, been more proactive. We mustn’t forget the work we did to get into the Super 12s. We’ll look to build on that. Our catching wasn’t so good in the last few games, but I know the boys worked really hard on that.”
Suryakumar Yadav is the Player of the Match. “I think the plan was very clear when me and Hardik were batting. He said let’s take the positive route and see where we end up. We started hitting the ball well and never stopped till the 20th over. The atmosphere in the team is very nice, and the build-up to the knockouts has been very nice. My plan is always clear. I’m not trying anything different.
I bat the same way in the nets as well. [On his 2022:] Feels really good, but coming out and starting from zero is what I always think when I come out to bat, and I’ll keep doing that. It’s good to see people come out and support us like this even after we’ve qualified.”

The last time India and Bangladesh met at the T20 World Cup, this happened. Bangladesh fans, look away. But obviously, that game has been spoken about every time the two sides have met since. Here’s Mohammad Isam referring to that and how the rivalry has come to be in his preview.
The rain has so far stayed away but conditions are overcast in Adelaide. The fans are slowly beginning to fill up the stadium even as Netherlands continue to hammer one blow after another to Zimbabwe.
“Looks like a good pitch, a bit of grass, and it’s a little overcast, so the ball might swing around a little bit, so we’ll try and use that to our advantage,” Rohit says. “Very much sorted with our preparation now. It’s time to come out and enjoy ourselves.”
6.20pm What does the pitch look like? According to Michael Clarke, it’s an “absolute beauty”. A bit of green grass on top, and it’s “rock hard”. “A beautiful batting pitch once you get in, get past that new ball.” He suggests that the captain winning the toss bat first. Interesting.
Jiten Chandaran: “It looks like Ashwin is playing, so that means they have some batting at 8, which allows Shami to come in for Harshal. I expect now.”
Fiaz Laghari: “A while ago, we friends left our room to get some breakfast and everyone out here on the roads seems to be in a great rush. It’s like a storm is coming and people are rushing to some safe place, that is how the excitement level is here in Lahore for Pak-Ind clash. Everyone trying to get their things done before the match starts.”
6.15pm Virat Kohli’s just given India’s players an animated pep talk. We’re also hearing that Mohammed Shami is marking out his run-up. If he plays, it’ll be his 18th T20I. Half of them, Sampath Bandarupalli informs me, have come at World Cups. That’s quite a stat.
Adarsh: “Here’s a left-field opinion: India should have Pant open today to create a left-right combination against Shaheen Shah Afridi and hopefully mess with his lines.”
BW: “Could this be the most viewed cricinfo commentary of all time? No pressure, Karthik.”
6.05pm Monga is watching India train, and his observations tell him Rishabh Pant probably isn’t playing tonight.
“Pakistan have put up three national flags on their warm-up side of the field,” Monga adds. “India zero.” Make of this what you will.
Syed: “Dreadful weather here in my town Swindon but terrific news about the weather in Melbourne hopefully to watch a full match without interference.” — I don’t think this has any basis in science, but the more rain there is in every non-Melbourne city in the world, the less the chances of rain in Melbourne. Swindon is doing its bit for cricket!
Syed Habeeb: “What is the news about Fakhar Zaman?” — He hasn’t recovered fully from his knee issue, so he’s not available today.

PAK vs IND T20I Series: PTV Sports Live Broadcast Pakistan vs England Match Today 2022
England won the first Twenty20 International by six wickets against Pakistan. Alex Hales’s fifty and Harry Brook’s unbeaten 42 off 25 balls propelled England to victory in their chase of 159. Previously, in a four-over stint, Luke Wood had three wickets and allowed only 24 runs.
Pakistan won the second game by 10 wickets thanks to an unbroken century from Babar Azam and a 203-run partnership between Azam and Mohammad Rizwan (88 not out). On Friday, England’s all-around performance paid off with a victory after Pakistan’s attempt to score 222 runs was unsuccessful by 63 runs.
Since 2022 will host the Twenty20 World Cup, every game will be vital. Twenty of England’s best players have made the trip to Pakistan. The Babar Azam-led team, on the other hand, maybe missing bowler Shaheen Afridi, but they still have some formidable players.
That’s why they’d want to make the most of their current situation at home. England has swept their last three Twenty20 Internationals against Pakistan. Twenty-four contests have been played between the two squads. To date, Pakistan has a 7-15 record.
